The braided slider portion of this spreader bar is defective
I like the mechanicals of this and thanks to Silent Sports for getting us great close-out deals. However, this bar has an extremely dangerous defect. The "slider rope" portion of this bar, at least in the closeout item I purchased, is not capable of handling a large load. I suspect it was substituted at the Chinese manufacturer. I kept hearing strange noises when I gybed on my surfboard. I could see that there were gaps in the bottom cover layer for which I was concerned but I could see that the length-wise fibres were intact. assuming that they were some version of the dyneema, I was not concerned as long as they are intact they should be capable of tension bearing and such fibres do not abrade very quickly against the metal slider. Nevertheless, I checked them every day due to concern and safety since I was doing long distance down-winders often far from shore and sometimes by myself.
I was not jumping or putting very high loads on this slider. I was using it mostly with an 8m kite on a surf-board, and a couple of times with 11m. One time by accident I used this with 11m and a twin tip and did some lame jumping (all that I am capable of). If you are using a twin-tip it is better to use the centre dyneema rope for stability.
Yesterday, the braided slider cable snapped. Fortunately it was at the shore at the beginning of my down-winder and not when I was alone or many kilometres out to sea. I am attaching the photo and you can see that the braid was just not capable of handling the tension. This was not due to wear or abrasion. When it snapped the load was very light as I was going out with an 8m and insufficient wind to even stay in place (bare minimum wind for down-winder). Expect this to fail under load at any time. I am supplying photograph.
I have attempted to call Silent sports to notify by telephone but my connection from here in Colombia is not stable enough.
